Manley Labs

Manley produced the first modern 300B high-fidelity amplifier, the first modern high powered tube power amps, the first new power tube design in thirty years, the KT90. Manley was also first to utilize the ULTRA ANALOG™ converters in the USA and the first in the world to show a converter with tubes. They just invented a new thing with the Passive Parametric Massive Passive... this is all old news....

"First" is exciting. "Best" is the real goal. "Affordable" is honest business. "Most Expensive" is for others, not Manley. They do, however, indulge in just a little "audiophilia nervosa": high purity wire, gold contacts, good layout, hand soldering and wiring, overkill power supplies, silver solder, 1% metal film resistors, film & foil capacitors, selected tubes, solid chassis, etc. They do all of this sincerely for the music, and for their customers.

PHONO STAGES

Manley Steelhead phono ampSteelhead Phono Stage

Debuted to the world this very cool phono stage at CES 2001. The Steelhead is an "upstream" device and has two Moving Coil inputs with selectable impedance load 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 ohms via Mr. Clever "Steelhead" transformer/autoformer. It also has variable  and selectable Moving Magnet input impedances too 25, 50, 100, 200 ohms and 47Kohms. Very nifty is the selectable-dial-able-in-able-from-the-faceplate-able capacitive loading for all three of the MM & MC inputs 0 to 1100 picofarads in 10 picofarad steps.  This is a tweak-o-holic tube-lover's dream....

  • Tube Compliment: - 2 x 6922 plus 4 x 7044
  • selectable gain 50, 55, 60, 65dB
  • 2 x MC and 1 x MM selectable inputs
  • output impedance is only 67 ohms

PREAMPLIFIERS

The Shrimp Preamplifier

The Shrimp is very quick and alive sounding with good rhythm and extension and very transparent sounding. It features a very short, simple minimalist signal path with all-tube design using  2 x 12AT7 + 2 x 7044. enerous energy storage via large power supply capacitors and no global feedback. (Some local feedback).

The Control Master Preamplifier

Manley offers the CONTROL MASTER PREAMPLIFIER in two versions: LINE only or with PHONO (MM & MC). The design is completely DUAL-MONO with separate power supplies for each channel including two custom designed power transformers. The audio boards are also separate. All the wiring from the rear input connectors to the front selector switch and precision custom stepped attenuator is painstakingly hand wired using professional studio twisted pair shielded six-9's copper cable for optimum shielding and low noise characteristics, and although it would be much cheaper, easier, and faster to simply put these leads on several feet of printed circuit board traces like most

The 300B Preamplifer

Manley's  most esoteric product is THE 300B PREAMPLlFIER, is the first and only preamp to feature these classic tubes.  Here is where the impedances are not too low and the power requirements are not too high: ideal for this kind of tube in a single-ended configuration.
Manley combined the historic 300B with another classic, the large octal based 6SL7GT, for the input stage- all triodes running in pure Class A operation. To complement this 'retro' feel, they implemented vacuum tube rectification (two 5AR4's) and regulation (two OD3's) in the power supply along with plenty of
capacity.
Complementing this lovely and rich sounding line-driver, we employed the two ideas found in premium passive preamps: a 24 position gold contact Grayhill switch with metal-film 1% 1/2 watt resistors for a superior audio attenuator and a widely separated ceramic switch for input selection.

  • 5 selectable inputs
  • 3 pairs of RCA outputs including TAPE direct sends
  • Vacuum Tubes 2 x 300B, 2 x 6SL7GT, 2 x 5AR4. 2 x 0D3
  • Output Power (100 ohm Headphones): 1W (10 V RMS) (28 V P-P)
  • Output Power (600 ohm Headphones): 1W( 25 V RMS) (70 V P-P)
  • Power Consumption: 170 Watts (1.4 A @ 120VAC)
  • Dimensions: W=19". L=13". H=3 1/2"
  • Shipping weight: 28 Ibs.

Whether you use headphones or loudspeakers this preamp will deliver the goods and spoil you for any other preamplifier.

The Reference Preamplifier

The Reference Preamp follows on from the Control Master and is also available in both LINE ONLY and PHONO versions. What sets this preamplifier apart is the separate vacuum tube regulated power supply (not shown). In the PHONO version, ahead of the MM RIAA circuitry, is found our superb 'Floating Symmetrical Mode' Moving Coil stage, which receives the fragile MC cartridge output as a fully differential signal offering excellent hum cancellation properties and wide spatial retrieval abilities. Gain of this stage is adjustable and is ideal for low impedance and medium to high output MC cartridges. Each of the two channels is on separate printed circuit boards and suspended on vibration-isolated rubber mounts.

POWERS AMPLIFIERS

50 Watts MonoblockManley Labs Little Amp - 50 Watt Monoblock

These little gems produce 50 watts RMS from a quartet of EL84 / 6BQ5 tubes driven by a 6414 dual triode driver and a 12AT7WA input dual triode. The Ei Yugo EL84 has been one of Manley's very favorite tubes for many years, extremely long lasting and reliable, and can be considered the smaller brother of the much beloved EL34: really quick-sounding both in the bass and especially in the top end. And of course this has a lot to do with the Manley Output transformer.

The Snapper Power Amp from Manley LabsThe Snapper
100 Watt Monoblock

Over three months of prototyping in the Manley Magnetics department resulted in a brand new output transformer design, a true 19-section incredibly complicated piece. The Snapper will crank out 100 watts at 18 cycles all day long and a full 110 watts from about 40Hz all the way up to 100KHz. Don't let frequency response specs fool you when people give you amazing bandwidth measured at... oh, five  puny watts. We're talking full power bandwidth here! Continuous duty - Real Muscle

Brand new for 2002 Manley Labs has put out yet another all-tube 100 watt monoblock that features a quartet of EL34's in a fully differential circuit topology, including the input (12AT7) and driver (7044) stages. This Snapper can be driven fully balanced all the way through via the XLR inputs. If you have balanced outputs on your preamplifier, this amplifier is the first Manley design to really let you take advantage of your XLR's  without additional balancing input circuitry or input transformers. Very cleverly, the unbalanced RCA's can alternatively be used in this special topology with equally impressive results. Biasing is easy with all measurement points and trimpots located on the top deck and speaker connection is made with heavy duty WBT binding posts.

The Snapper Power Amp from Manley Labs250 Watt Monoblock
Neo-Classic Design

Same great ballsy sound, new chassis design to fit in those HUGE new transformers! The NEO-Classic 250 is here!

Tried and true: The Manley 500 and 250 Watt Monoblocks are their most powerful push-pull production-models. Both the circuit design and the selected componentry have been refined over years and years of development. Reliability that you can depend upon combined with musical accuracy and emotional authority is what these amplifiers promise - and deliver. They are able to switch operation modes allowing the listener to choose between the sonically seductive qualities of triode and the more powerful tetrode configuration.

To avoid a heavy power drain when the cold amplifier is first switched on, Manley created the "Soft-Start" mode which also functions as an "Ever-Warm" position allowing the amplifiers to be always warmed up for pleasurable listening. Each amplifier only consumes 30 watts of power in Ever-Warm mode. A blinking green LED reminds the user that the amplifier is in warm-up mode because as all the power supplies are at half-voltage, the amplifier will still play tunes (albeit not-so-great-sounding-tunes) when the Ever-Warm mode is engaged.

Manley 150 / 75 SE / PP 807 Monoblock

With the current resurgence of interest in the "retro" technology and particularly in single-ended retro technology, the matter of sufficient drive power for modern loudspeakers becomes a very real problem. Manley decide that the market needed one 'BIG BOY' single-ended amplifier.

The 150 / 75 SE/PP 807 MONOBLOCKS can switch from either 75 watts in single-ended to 150 watts in push-pull. The 807 tube was chosen for good reasons: easy availability and high reliability, but mainly for its glorious sound in its (intended design parameter) triode-strapped configuration. Manley uses 8 of them in parallel as the output stage which presents a favorably low anode impedance to the very special MANLEY output transformer which in turn provides a very low impedance drive to the loudspeaker and a much higher damping factor than other single-ended designs. Single-ended detail with high-power brawn.

  • Vacuum Tubes: Output 8 x 807, Driver 7044, Input 5751

  • Output Power @ 3% THD

  • Single-Ended: 72 watts

  • Push-Pull: 150 watts
